Domex cold forming steel is produced by thermomechanical rolling techniques and each individual grade is defined by guaranteed minimum yield point.
The range of Domex cold forming steels divides into two distinct groups, characterised by their testing direction. Both groups possess lean analysis and exhibit excellent multi-directional bending properties, which are combined with high strength.
Domex MC
Manufactured in accordance with BS EN 10149 - 2 and tested longitudinal to the rolling direction. The material is available with guaranteed minimum yield strengths from 315 N/mm² to 700 N/mm². Minimum thickness is 2.00mm with maximum thickness of 12.00mm, grade dependent.
Domex cold forming steels are used where there is a need to increase strength without incurring a weight penalty or where a tighter bending radius than is available from conventional steels is required.
For some applications cold forming using Domex steels can replace expensive hot forming operations.
Domex cold forming steels have consistent properties, offering designers the choice of stronger constructions at the same weight or lighter constructions with the same strength, coupled with consistent multidirectional bending properties.
Typical applications include automotive chassis components, crane booms and truck bodies.
These steels can be bent, sheared and punched on standard workshop equipment. Tooling should be maintained in good condition and slightly more power may be required, than with conventional steels.
Welding of Domex cold forming steels may be carried out using all standard methods and filler materials. Lean analysis renders the steels resistant to heat embrittlement and hot cracking. Preheating is necessary only in extreme cases.
Domex XP/YP
Manufactured in accordance with BS 1449 : Section 1.4 : 1991 and tested transverse to the rolling direction. The material is available with guaranteed minimum yield strengths from 240 N/mm² to 740 N/mm². Minimum thickness is 2.00mm with maximum thickness of 16.00mm, grade dependent.
